Childbirth Education Classes
Comprehensive childbirth classes prepares the mother-to-be realistically for the process
of labor and birth. Birth education must be based on the belief that women (and their partners) have inner strengths and
resources to apply to this process and a biopsychosocial model, as knowledge is for empowering. Childbirth education is
the most helpful labor support tool. Especially when it is based on the principles laid out in the The Mother-Friendly
Childbirth Initiative, ratified by organizations such as: American Society of Psychoprophylaxis in Obstetrics,
American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth, Perinatal Psychology and Health, Association of Women's Health,
Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, Center for Perinatal Research & Family Support, Midwives Alliance of North America,
Midwifery Today, North American Registry of Midwives, Doulas of North America, National Association of Postpartum Care
Services, Academy of Certified Birth Educators, Association of Women's Health, Global Maternal/Child Health Association,
Informed Parenting. The philosophical cornerstone of this initiative is, normlacy of the birthing process, empowerment,
autonomy, do no harm and responsibility. (electronic copies of this initiative http://www.healthy.net/cims or http://www.healthy.net/forums.htm)
